A lithium-ion battery is a type of rechargeable battery that is commonly seen in electronic devices and other energy-storing devices. Temperature Range for Charging Lithium-ion Batteries

There are several varieties of lithium-ion batteries, and the charging temperature range should be thoroughly understood. During the frigid winter, they may be charged from 5°C to 45°C. However, charging is not permitted below 5°C due to the anodes' lower diffusion rates. Internal cell resistance in lithium-ion batteries causes a modest temperature increase, which compensates for them in cold conditions. On the other side, technological improvements enable batteries to be charged at temperatures below freezing. They demonstrate ways for charging a battery with very low current. When charging a lithium-ion battery below 0°C, a chemical process known as "Lithium Plating" occurs. This causes the lithium ions to react at a quicker pace than usual. Aside from that, they will build up on the anode surfaces. When a chemical reaction happens, the internal resistance of a battery rises, which might have serious repercussions. Another disadvantage is that it permanently reduces the metabolic rate and battery capacity. As a result, charging the battery below 0°C should be avoided.  Modern lithium-ion batteries include a BMS (Battery Management System) that allows them to be heated and charged automatically. The heating element built in the battery allows for temperature changes ranging from -20°C to + 5°C. Furthermore, when the temperature climbs to +10°C, it will stop charging and resume charging.Before charging a lithium-ion battery, it is important to understand how they function. Like conventional batteries, lithium-ion batteries have a cathode and anode followed by an electrolyte. While charging a battery, lithium ions flow from the cathode to the anode.Furthermore, during the discharging process, the ions will leave the anode and return to the cathode. Furthermore, they cause intercalation, which aids in obtaining the desired results. After exiting the cathode, the lithium ions intercalate with the graphite anode. When charging a lithium-ion battery at temperatures below freezing, the lithium ions may fail to intercalate into the anode. As a result, lithium-ion batteries require adequate maintenance during cold weather, which provides solutions to damage and other issues. Lithium-ion batteries should not be transported outside in the cold and require extra attention during extreme freeze conditions.
